Maps and Graphics

GRID centres collectively hold thousands of digital maps at various scales (global, continental, regional, national and sub-national) covering a wide variety of human and natural environmental themes. GRID-Europe produced various sets of maps to support the PCAU, ROE, UNITAR, UN-OCHA, UNOPS and other partner organisations in effectively carrying out their work.

Publications

GRID-Europe in collaboration with various partner organisations publishes a variety of scientific reports and papers intended to assist decision- makers and for environmental awareness raising. This includes inputs to the European chapters of UNEP’s Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) report.

Data Sets

GRID's archives contain numerous high quality data sets at various scales (global, continental, national and subnational) on a variety of environment related themes. The data are provided free of charge to users around the world.

Remote Sensing and GIS

GRID-Europe provides services to UNEP divisons and partner organisations, environmental conventions and UN agencies in the development of new GIS data layers, customised GIS applications and databases. Typically, the office is commissioned to enhance existing GIS datasets or to develop new GIS databases on a consultancy basis and receives funds for associated services on a time and materials basis. In other cases, a cooperative agreement may be reached with the client if the project is a priority area of activity for UNEP. The principal GIS softwares used at GRID-Europe include ArcInfo, ArcView and MapInfo.

GRID-Europe carries-out interpretation of satellite imagery as part of its global environmental assessment work, as well as for use by UNEP divisions and partner institutions who are not specialized in remote sensing, or do not have access to image analysis hardware or software. Data are typically supplied by UNEP partner agencies, such as USGS/GRID-Sioux Falls, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (EC/JRC), the European Space Agency (ESA) or obtained through commercial vendors. The principal image processing softwares used at GRID-Europe include ERDAS, ER Mapper and IDRISI.

Website Design

GRID-Europe offers its creative and cutting-edge website design and consultation services to promote public access to environmental information. GRID-Europe also arranges for a variety of different kinds of website hosting arrangements for external institutions, including Webmaster services to keep the site current and to address any problems that might occur with the portal.

Map Servers

Since 1999 DEWA~Europe/GRID-Europe has been providing services to UNEP divisons and partner organisations and UN agencies in the development of Internet Mapping Systems/Solutions (IMS), allowing the distribution and exchange of Web-enabled GIS data, as well as exchanging data with other online databases.
