Remote
Sensing and GIS
GRID-Europe
provides services to UNEP divisons and partner organisations, environmental
conventions and UN agencies in the development of new GIS data layers,
customised GIS applications and databases. Typically, the office
is commissioned to enhance existing GIS datasets or to develop new
GIS databases on a consultancy basis and receives funds for associated
services on a time and materials basis. In other cases, a cooperative
agreement may be reached with the client if the project is a priority
area of activity for UNEP. The principal GIS softwares used at GRID-Europe
include ArcInfo, ArcView and MapInfo.
GRID-Europe carries-out interpretation of satellite imagery as part
of its global environmental assessment work, as well as for use by
UNEP divisions and partner institutions who are not specialized in
remote sensing, or do not have access to image analysis hardware or
software. Data are typically supplied by UNEP partner agencies, such
as USGS/GRID-Sioux Falls, the Joint Research Centre of the European
Commission (EC/JRC), the European Space Agency (ESA) or obtained through
commercial vendors. The principal image processing softwares used at
GRID-Europe include ERDAS, ER Mapper and IDRISI. |
